East Ham Depot

Spencer Rail Engineering were chosen by operator c2c Rail to carry out extensive upgrades at its East Ham depot, in east London. The works were required to enable the servicing and maintenance of c2c’s new fleet of Aventra 720/6 trains. Spencer Rail Engineering, working in close collaboration with c2c, drew on our wide range of in-house multi-disciplinary skills and expertise to self-deliver much of the project.

PROJECT SCOPE

The works included the removal of part of a redundant platform to create space for a plant room as part of a new CET (controlled emission toilets) system, the construction of a new track slab and sleepers, as well as overhead line equipment upgrades.

The main CET system was designed and installed completely by Spencer M&E – one of three new systems, which was previously sub-contracted as similar works on other projects.

The East Ham project involved upgrading the existing infrastructure to improve safety, including new interlocking access gantry and emergency access gates.

Spencer Rail Engineering has also delivered improvements to the depot’s maintenance shed, including a new gantry crane, wheel drop facility, access platforms, calibrated track and further overhead line upgrades.

All of these works were completed while the main line was still operational, working closely with c2c and Network Rail’s Asset Protection and Optimisation (ASPRO) team to ensure compliance with safety standards and engineering assurance processes.

PROJECT OUTCOME

This project is a further demonstration of Spencer Rail Engineering’s capacity to deliver complex, multi-disciplinary works of this kind to the highest possible standard.

The project team worked closely with c2c Rail every step of the way to ensure these upgrades met their requirements and that our works didn’t stop their successful operation of this busy depot.

Regular dialogue and collaborative working were instrumental in the success
of this project.

David Boole, Depots and Infrastructure Manager representing c2c Rail, said:
“The project had some challenges, but with a close working relationship and true collaboration between contractor and client, these were overcome.

“Spencer Rail Engineering delivered exactly what we required to a very high standard.”
