Rainham and Strood
Part of the £150m Network Rail East Kent route re-signalling under a hub and spoke collaborative project. Spencer Rail Engineering were awarded the civils works contract, part of which involved a new bay platform at Rainham Station together with the extension of the existing Platform 1 to enable 12 Car operations. At Strood station Platforms 2 and 3 needed lengthening and a section of Platform 1 was refurbished.
Rainham:
• Constructing new bay platform and extending Platform 1 using insitu and precast concrete.
• Installing sheet pile wall and acoustic fence adjacent to the bay platform.
• Drainage works including installing attenuation tank in existing car park
• Platform lighting and PA systems, installing platform passenger structures
• Modifications to existing car park
Strood:
• Extending Platforms 2 and 3 to facilitate 12 Car operations
• Extending Platform 3 track bed to facilitate new loop line
• Modifying the drainage system to facilitate the extended platforms
• Widening the track bed including installation of sheet pile retaining wall
• Installing polystyrene platform section into Platform 1
Works were carried out adjacent to the stations and railway so we used our rail expertise to ensure the majority of construction activities were undertaken with minimal interference to the operational railway.
Rainham station is located in a residential urban environment. Regular meetings with representatives of the local community took place to outline the various stages of construction and respond to any concerns. To assist the local community Spencer Rail Engineering set up their main site offices within the existing Community Centre adjacent to the station.
At Strood, we engineered design modifications to ensure minimal disruption, including the use of polystyrene blocks to replace a damaged section of Platform 1 and a significantly enhanced programme was developed through revised design of the Platform 2 and 3 extensions to work more efficiently with a maximised prefabricated construction methodology.
